The Full List of Second Homes by Parish in Cornwall

The response to my proposals of getting legislation changed that would require planning/change of use for holiday lets and second homes has been positive. I have also been offered support from many quarters, not just within the council.

Since the publication of the data, I have been asked by people “what about my area?” So here is the list in full by Parish in Cornwall. I warn you, the list is long. This list only includes second homes (not holiday lets).

  • Hi Andy, fascinating reading! While I continue to think that the inability of young families in Cornwall to even dream about getting on the housing ladder (av 1st time buyer age 40 now, I understand) without family help is a scandal, given the gap between house prices and income, I’m not convinced that 2nd homes are the biggest problem. This list confirms my prev. impression – it is the chocolate box lid, coastal villages that head the percentages with prices typically heading towards, or exceeding, 7 figures. These large properties are unlikely to ever come within the reach of 1st time buyers, legislation or not. And as compensation the owners often have the financial clout to spend a lot on maintenance and alterations which provides local jobs and income. Also how do you police this sort of thing? Get outs must include husband’s full time home Chelsea, wife’s full time home Rock, etc.

  • PS Re the “Bloggers Award” tag, I think yours should be No 1 in the “Political” category 🙂 A great blog.

  • My concern is that if you change the rules re planning on second homes what some will do is just not bother to declare it as a second home, especially if it makes no difference to the cost of the tax. If you try to make 2nd homes a bigger tax which some advocate then how is it going to be policed? Will the cost of checking outweigh the extra money claimed? The biggest problem over house prices is those that move permanently to Cornwall who sell up property in London. They are most able to afford high prices but they gave a vote if they move to Cornwall second homes owners don’t so are a soft target. Be careful of unintentional consequences causing more problems than they solve.

  • Another problem with people who sell up in the SE or Cheshire or wherever, is that the value of their former homes allows them to top the purchasing ability of local people, but the reason they buy down here is because they want Cornwall exactly as it is today, they want to keep the view they have just bought and if a cluster of affordable houses or whatever is proposed in their line of sight, they fight it tooth and nail with their ample spare time, organisational ability and abiity to articulate and fund their case. Those who might benefit from the homes have no voice, the badly housed cannot fight in favour of a home they might otherwise occupy, because as a group they cannot be identified or canvassed, even though by having roots and working in the County they are stakeholders. If we block Cornwall from being a dynamic entity, changing and responding to circumstances and demand as it always has been during its long and proud history it will die. Would the present crop of retirees that oppose change have allowed Cornwall to have emerged as one of the foremost areas of the world’s 1st Industrial Revolution? I doubt it!

Hi Andrew, many thanks for this. Is the council able to
break these down further perhaps by postcode. I’m particularly
interested in the Newlyn and Mousehole. All the best,
    Julyan
